UFC on FX 2's Joseph Benavidez believes it's only a matter of time before lighter weights catch on with more fans

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Joseph_Benavidez_180.jpg
The UFC's flyweight division will debut this Friday night with the UFC on FX 2 card from Sydney, Australia. The four-man tournament features two established names and former title challengers in the bantamweight division, along with two top 125 lb. newcomers, and they'll be out to show why the UFC brought the division into the organization in the first place.

The new lighter weight classes in featherweight and bantamweight have yet to fully take hold with the UFC's casual audience, and flyweights will have another tough battle ahead of them in gaining widespread acceptance as well. However, in Benavidez's case, he feels it's only a matter of time before fans come around.

"All this stuff happens with time," Benavidez said in an interview with Jonathan Snowden at BleacherReport.com. "Look at the UFC when it first started. Not everyone respected it like they do now as a sport. And those guys were big. People are used to seeing the 205 pounders and heavyweights because they've been around for awhile. This (the flyweight division) is new stuff. I think the more fans see it, the more they will respect it. There's no way you can watch one of our fights and not respect it....when it's all over, they'll probably end up favoring the smaller weight classes. Because the fights are so much more exciting and technical."

Benavidez faces Yasuhiro Urushitani in his first round matchup in the four-man tournament, while Demetrious Johnson takes on Ian McCall in the other semifinal bout. The winners will then square off later this year for the first ever UFC Flyweight Championship, and Benavidez sees this opportunity at 125 lbs. as a dream coming true.

"To be crowned the first flyweight champion. To be a UFC champion? That's a dream come true," Benavidez said. "That's been my goal since the very beginning. I have a picture of the UFC belt on my mantle. Just a photograph until I do get a real one. I look at it everyday. That's the dream.

"That belt is going to be the first of its kind. Talk about a legacy. That's a legacy all in itself. The first flyweight champion. That's something I'll always be able to look back on. Set out on the road for all the other flyweights to come. That would be huge."

Penick's Analysis: For a long time, Benavidez has been a fighter most have believed would benefit most from the flyweight division, with Johnson a close second. Benavidez came very close to capturing the WEC Bantamweight Title from Dominick Cruz, but in losing two razor-thin decisions to Cruz, and being teammates with Urijah Faber, there wasn't much room for advancement in the 135 lb. division. At 125 lbs., he's no longer going to be the smallest fighter every time out, and indeed he's expected to have success in this new class. A big performance against Urishitani is just the beginning, and if he can do that, his bout against either Johnson or McCall will make for a fantastic title fight.

ASK THE TORCH: Amadi answers reader questions on including damage in the unified rules of MMA, and UFC competition

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Columnist

Staff10Amadi_130_41.jpg
Neil writes: I just read your article concerning Frankie Edgar moving down a weight. While I agree with most of the content, there was one part I couldn't agree with. When you said damage isn't and shouldn't be part of the unified rules I have to say that surely damage is evidence of effective striking so already is, and always rightfully should be considered.

A: I think you're absolutely right. Damage is evidence of effective striking and I believe that is the extent to which it should be represented in the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. When I said that I didn't think damage should be listed as part of the scoring criteria, I simply meant that I was satisfied with the exclusion of the word "damage."

There are a lot of people out there who believe the Unified Rules should be amended to include phrases like "damage" and "effort to finish the fight," but I believe nebulous concepts like these would do far more harm than good.

The fact is, "damage" is completely superficial in most cases. You can only really identify damage through things like cuts, bruises, black eyes and bloody noses. Those are certainly things to look for in a fight, but at the end of the day what we should be scoring are clean, hard strikes. Effective striking is simply the best of both worlds.

It's popular right now to blame the Unified Rules for all the judging problems in mixed martial arts, and admittedly I used to be one of them. However, if you really take the time to read the rules, you'll find that the problem isn't the tool, but rather how it's used.

Brent writes: Would it be better for the UFC to have an organization rise up and produce competition for them, much like the WWE had with WCW, or for them to sit alone at the top with nobody to challenge them or compete with?

A: When people make this comparison I always point out that pro wrestling is a work and MMA is a shoot. If two pro wrestling companies go head to head, they can just up the quality of their shows. Pro wrestling companies can tighten things up, produce better storylines and give in more to the will of the fans.

That dynamic doesn't exist in mixed martial arts. In MMA you can have elaborate entrances and things like that, but the sport ultimately never changes.

Quite frankly, I have a hard time seeing any way the UFC could benefit from competition. They already put on fights fans want to see, they're giving away a ton of free cards this year and reduced the number of pay-per-views they put on. In my opinion, the UFC is already running at peak performance and has been since their only real competition (Pride Fighting Championships) went under.

That being said, fighters don't have the same ability to negotiate with the UFC alone at the top, but for fans this is ideal.

MMATorch Interview: UFC's Sean Loeffler recalls insane 2004 fight in Tijuana with drunk coach, crazy fans, and much more

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Sean_Loeffler_180_1.jpeg
One of the UFC's newest signees, middleweight Sean Loeffler, is a longtime veteran of the sport and a man of many tales. In a career that has spanned 12 years and countless organizations all over the place, Loeffler has seen a few things and experienced even more. In an interview last week as he was biding his time until ankle surgery this week, Loeffler regaled MMATorch with a couple of crazy, at times hard to believe stories. Here's one hell of a tale, the way Loeffler remembers it:

"I've had crazy things happen that a lot of people don't know about, that I haven't really told anybody; not because it's a secret, but because I probably haven't thought back to stuff.

I had a fight in Mexico in maybe 2004 - which is still not really early days, but it was kind of the early days and it was still Tijuana, Mexico. I go there and show up and I was fighting some real tough guy who was training at Team Quest; he was 2-0, I had more fights than him but I knew he was a tough guy. I don't love fighting wrestlers, anybody knows as a jiu jitsu guy with knockout power, wrestlers are kind of [my] nemesis. They're the only type of fighter that can make me seem not as exciting as what I am, so I'm not a huge fan of going against wrestlers. They don't want to strike with you, when you're on the ground they don't want to ever create enough space where you can do anything, they have good bases; so good for them, they can win a fight by being a duvet. But I was fighting this wrestler, I knew it was going to be a war, and it ended up going to a decision.

We get down to Mexico, and my dad gives my coach a couple hundred bucks; they put us up in this hotel in Tijuana, and [my dad told him], 'Ok, let Sean sleep in until 12:01, then get Sean to breakfast and to the arena.'

My coach says, 'cool.' Then he woke up around 9AM before I woke up and went to walk around TJ.

My dad starts calling my cell phone, which doesn't work down there, so he starts calling the hotel. The hotel people came up and said 'someone's trying to get a hold of you.' I go down to the lobby because my room phone didn't work and it's probably 4:30PM.

My dad's freaking out, he's like 'where the f*** are you?'

I said 'I'm at the hotel.'

He said 'what do you mean you're at the hotel? Where's Bob?'

I go, 'I don't know, I haven't seen him since I went to sleep last night, what are you talking about?'

He said, 'what do you mean you haven't seen him?'

I said, 'I don't f***ing know, dad. I'm in Mexico. I don't know where f***ing Bob is.'

He goes, 'Oh, Jesus. I gave him $200 and told him to get you a cab, and food before your fight and to wake you up by 1.'

I just said, 'Well, I haven't seen him. What do you want me to do?'

So he called some of my friends and said, 'you gotta go pick Sean up and get him to the arena, he's late. Check ins were at 3, it's 4:30 and he's still at the f***ing hotel 20 minutes away from the arena.'

They get me there late, and the promoter is definitely mafia run, like Tijuana-cartel guy. He just looks at me and he's furious, and said 'You're the main event, what are you doing, man? What do you think you're doing?'

I said, 'F***, I'm not from here, I don't speak this language, I'm just here to fight, bro.'

He said, 'If you needed to fight, you should be on time, man.'

I'm like, 'F***, I get it, where's the locker room?'

So we go up to the locker room. My dad brings me this sh***y plate of carne asada - which was probably dog meat - and I'm eating before I warm up. Then they take an intermission right before my fight; I'm all warm, we're in the top floor of this arena. These stupid, stupid f***ing people down in Mexico running this organization lit off fireworks in the building before the main event. They lit all this f***ing shit off, and we're on the top floor warming up. They don't have any ventilation system up there, so it was just pure smoke in my locker room for ten minutes straight. I thought the building was on fire.

My coaches are trying to find our bags and we're going 'holy s***!' And then these guys are like 'don't worry about it, it was just fireworks.'

We're like 'why the f*** are you lighting fireworks inside of closed doors?'

'We didn't think that through, we got fans coming though. Don't worry man, we'll give you another intermission.'

I'm like, 'This is f***ed.'

He says, 'Just chill out, man, just have a beer or something.'

I'm like, 'I'm about to fight, and it's all f***ing smoky in here!'

So they bring us down to this basement, and I'm terrified now because I was thinking they were just gonna kill us. They're just going to take us to a back room and kill us and just say we set fire to the arena or some s*** like that.

Now, the guys that are cornering me were just two of my friends, they know nothing about fighting. They don't know one f***ing thing about fighting. I knew I was fighting a tough guy, and this guy in his corner had every stud wrestler you could imagine; I think Randy Couture was even down at the event.

We walk down to the cage, we get into the cage and start fighting. We're having a good fight back and forth. I'm dominating on the ground, passing his guard; now, this guy looked completely Mexican even though he was training at Team Quest, and the crowd just f***ing hates me. I'm some white guy with tattoos, my cornerman are just two of my homies with wife beaters on. The crowd's just livid.

In between the first and second round I'm exhausted. There's smoke everywhere, I warmed up the complete wrong way. I looked at my dad and asked who had the round timer. He said he had it on his watch. He looked down and went, 'F***! That was a ten minute round!' He ran up to talk to the promoter. They stopped the timekeeper's clock at the end of the first round, but the guy went to take a piss at the end of the first round and they never hit the bell so we went ten minutes.

I knew I was more tired than I was supposed to be. I'm just sucking wind. I'm yelling at the guys that are cornering me to throw me a f***ing water bottle. Nobody was handing me anything, nobody knew what they were doing; they were still on the outside of the cage. They finally hand me a stool over the cage after a minute.

My dad finally comes back and says, 'Ok, the next two rounds are going to be three minutes apiece. So instead of three fives you're going to do a ten and two threes.'

I'm just like 'F***ing Mexico. This is bulls***.'

30 seconds later, the referee starts yelling at somebody, and I see my coach Bob on the side of the arena with a beer in his hand.

I yelled, 'Where the f*** have you been?!' The ref was telling me to get ready to fight, and I just said, 'F*** that, where have you been?' The ref's telling him he needs to get out of the cage as he's trying to get in with a beer in his hand.

Bob says, 'You didn't need me here, you got this, you won that round, I was watching!'

I just said, 'F*** him.'

So we go through the second round. I hear my dad say the time at 3:39, and I'm like '3:39? It was supposed to be a three minute round!' They finally stop the round around 3:48, realizing they f***ed up again. So I go to get back into my corner and Bob comes into the corner, drinking, and he sits on my stool.

I said, 'Let me sit down.'

He says, 'No, stand up, we don't want your legs to get tired.'

I'm like, 'my legs are tired, I need to sit down. You just want to sit on my stool, why am I even arguing with you right now?'

My dad is livid at this point. He said 'Bob you f***ing stand the f*** up right now!'

So he gets up and he just starts patting me on my back. Now, he's one of the best cornermen in the world, but he's been drinking in Mexico all day. He's just patting me on the back and just saying 'You got this. You got this.'

The third round starts, and I look at the ref and just say, 'Is this going to be a three minute round? I'm exhausted, please make sure it's a three minute round.'

I look over at my opponent, and he's dying too. We just did a ten minute round with a two and a half minute break, a four minute round with a 45 second break, and he's looking at me and we both start to laugh. Now I never touch gloves, and we actually touched gloves at the start of round three and we're just laughing, like 'This is f***ing ridiculous. The arena's filled with smoke, the rounds are all f***ed up.'

We start up, he landed a big knee as I shot a double. I get to mount, and the whole crowd is now chanting 'Gonzalez, Gonzalez" - that's not even his name, by the way - and I'm realizing that these people think he's some hometown guy.

As the round is nearing an end I go for an Americana, and I feel this stinging on my leg, by the top of my foot. I look down, and some f***ing drunk Mexican had thrown a cigar at me, because "Gonzalez" their boy was losing - he wasn't even their f***ing guy! So I let go of the Americana, swipe the f***ing cigar away and then the round ends.

I helped him up, he gave me a big hug, he's covered in blood. I went to talk to one of the ring girls who spoke English because I'm just disgusted and didn't want to talk to anyone in my corner. I'm super pissed off at my friends for not giving me water, my dad for arguing with the timekeeper, and Bob for just being f***ing drunk the whole time. Then I'm irritated at the crowd for throwing cigars at me at the end of the fight because I'm beating up their guy, who isn't even their f***ing guy.

I go back to the locker room completely exhausted, and then they paid me one third of the money that I was supposed to get. I walked back to my hotel room two miles because I didn't want to be around anyone else. I walk back across the border to get my car. As I go to get my car from the American side of the border, I notice something hanging out the back of my trunk. My car had been broken into and the stereo had been taking. Unf***ingbelievable.

I went down there, I made $275. The next day I went to Audio World and bought a new speaker system for like $260. So I basically broke even, got a burn on my f***ing foot from a cigar, and fought some guy named "Gonzalez" that doesn't exist.

I've got so many stories like that in the early days of MMA that people wouldn't believe. But then all the fighters that know me and have fought in the day, we can go hours with the 'I remember this one time back in the day…' stories with Bas Rutten, Tito Ortiz, Dan Severn, Travis Fulton, and others with all the crazy s*** that's happened in cage fights that you just wouldn't believe."

MOORE: Examining options for the next UFC broadcast partner in the UK (Part Two)

By: Daniel Moore, MMATorch UK Contributor

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_26.jpg
Last time out I covered the current UFC broadcasting partner ESPN. Now it's time to focus on the other major sports broadcast channel in the UK, Sky Sports:

SKY SPORTS - (25m potential viewers)

Sky Sports is the UK equivalent of ESPN in America. They are unequivocal market leaders in the United Kingdom, and dare I say it, trend setters here in the way sport is broadcast. I annotated above that Sky is currently available to around 25 million homes. Not everyone subscribes to their sports package though, making it difficult to give an accurate figure. In addition to their own service, which has 10m subscribers, Sky channels are available on BT Vision, Top Up, Virgin, Smallworld, TalkTalk and UPC Ireland. Their rapid growth is continuing, and by 2016, their content will be viewed by more than half the UK population.

Sky Sports content is currently shown on five independent channels, all of which are available in SD and HD format. Four of the channels cover a myriad of sports, with the fifth being a dedicated sports news channel that airs 24 hours a day. Over the past 18 months they have also started to broadcast specific sports in 3D (more on that later). In addition to the big UK sports such as Football, Rugby and Cricket, they currently show the NFL and WWE. I am a huge NFL fan and the coverage over here is magnificent. It's taken a long time for the sport to catch on, but it's rapidly gaining a huge following, largely thanks to Sky. It is more popular now than ever before. Once upon a time they were at the level of popularity the UFC finds itself in now, but still managed to flourish in the UK with the help of Sky.

Sky have been showing WWE programming since 1989. In addition to the weekly content, they show almost every Pay-Per-View event on their box office channel at £14.95 a time. When considering Sky Sports as a new partner, that last sentence sets off alarm bells in my head. I despise PPV, and all it stands for, with an absolute unadulterated passion. You don't need a plutonium fueled DeLorean to predict that in the future, Sky will broadcast UFC numbered events on PPV if they ever join forces with Zuffa. For many years Sky only showed the big four WWE events (Wrestlemania etc) on PPV with the rest being free. Over time, and with the luxury of a new contract, they slowly increased the PPV shows, to a point, where only one or two are now free.

I'll admit it, I love Sky, and I love their sports coverage. They take things to the next level, and they're a company who stop at nothing to get what they want. How long before they get to broadcast the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup despite the fact they aren't even allowed too right now? It's a matter of time. They dominate the Premier League, and their recent acquisition of Formula One, further demonstrates their power, easily outbidding the BBC, a channel WE pay for. As for F1, they have even dedicated an entire channel to its coverage, who else would, or could do that? They are also marketing juggernauts. I have no concerns with their potential ability to promote the UFC to the casual sports fan. They advertise everywhere and anywhere, and I doubt there is a single 18-35 male right now, who doesn't know F1 can soon be seen on Sky Sports.

We all know that 3D TV is the future, I know it, you guys know it, Zuffa knows it. Sky have the capability to fulfill this potential viewing dream. I've seen Premier League football in 3D, and despite looking like a complete prat in the glasses, I was mesmerized by how good it was. Sadly I also witnessed the David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko bout in 3D, and despite the lack of action, it was enough to convince me that UFC fights in 3D will be stunning. It's a long way off from now, but to know it's even a remote possibility, is good enough for me.

Another major plus point for Sky comes courtesy of Mr. Rupert Murdoch himself. This man owns British Sky Broadcasting, and yes you guessed correctly, he also owns Fox Broadcasting Company. The very same company that recently spent a reported $700 million acquiring rights to show the UFC in America over the next seven years. Unless I've missed something recently, according to Dana White, this unison has been a match made in TV heaven.

I would be amazed if Zuffa aren't currently investigating the possibility of jumping into bed with Murdoch. It doesn't take Albert Einstein to work out that BSkyB is where the UFC wants to be after August 2012. Who could blame them for having that train of thought? Not me that's for sure.

UFC ON FX 2 PREVIEW: Penick's quick thoughts and fight picks for "Alves vs. Kampmann" main card

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_FX_2_poster_180_1.jpg
The UFC returns to Australia this week for the third straight year, hitting Sydney's Allphones Arena with the second UFC main card dedicated to FX. The network has aired three preliminary card broadcasts for UFC pay-per-views thus far, but only January's Melvin Guillard vs. Jim Miller headlined event in Nashville was dedicated to FX.

This week sees a welterweight bout between Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann in the night's main event, with both fighters hoping to reestablish themselves in the UFC's 170 lb. mix. Additionally, the flyweight division makes it's debut with four fighters vying to get into the very first UFC Flyweight Championship bout later this year. Here's what Friday's main card has in store:

Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann (Welterweight):

Alves is a one-time title challenger in the welterweight division, and he's coming off a very good - and needed - win over Papy Abedi last November. He's got a very dangerous Muay Thai attack, and has a fairly decent ground game, but he's struggled with fighters who can press the pace on him and keep him off balance against the cage.

Martin Kampmann suffered two consecutive decision losses that he felt he shouldn't have lost in 2010 and 2011, but bounced back with a win over Rick Story in his last fight. Like Alves, he likes to concentrate on his striking attack, but he's also quite adept on the ground as well.

This is a fight that can easily end in one of the two of them being knocked unconscious, though we haven't seen either of them fighting to their potential in the last several years. If this is going to turn into a firefight, it's going to be Alves' brute power going against Kampmann's technical striking attack, and it should make for an entertaining matchup. Kampmann's been on the receiving end of a couple of beatings in his career, but he's dished out a few as well. However, Alves has only been stopped twice in the UFC, and the last time that happened it was almost six years ago. I've got Alves continuing to get back on track with a second round TKO.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani (Flyweight):

Urushitani is the least-known fighter coming into this four-man flyweight field. The Shooto 123 lb. Champion, the 5'5" Japanese fighter has spent nearly the entirety of his 11 year career in his home country, and this will be his first time he's ventured out of Japan since a 2006 bout in South Korea.

Benavidez, on the other hand, is a completely proven commodity. He had been an exciting bantamweight, who most felt was one of the top three or four bantamweights in the world. His fights with Dominick Cruz were really close, and in fact I scored their title fight in Benavidez's favor when it happened.

This is a fight that pits an extremely well-rounded Benavidez against a skilled competitor in Urishitani, but I don't see any reason Benavidez can't establish himself as the man to beat at 125 lbs. He's immensely fast, has definite power in his strikes, has very good wrestling, and a very good submission game. I've got Benavidez via submission in the second round.

Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall (Flyweight)

Johnson is another fighter who UFC fans have been wanting to see in a more natural environment. He found a lot of success as a bantamweight despite a severe size disadvantage against everyone he came up against. His success brought him all the way to a Bantamweight Title shot, but much like Benavidez, he fell short to Dominick Cruz by decision.

McCall, affectionately known as "Uncle Creepy" by his fans, has made his name as a top flyweight entirely on the outside. He, too, has a loss to Cruz as a bantamweight, his coming in one of his three fights in the UFC. McCall is a fairly well rounded fighter, holding several wins by TKO or submission, and he is a serious threat to Johnson in this matchup.

This is sure to be an evenly contested fight. McCall's striking and submission game will challenge Johnson's speed and wrestling, and both will be out to stake their claim to a shot at the very first UFC Flyweight Championship. This is going to be a very tough fight for each of them, and though Johnson is the more proven fighter to this point, I'm going to lean towards McCall taking a unanimous decision.

Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou (Middleweight)

McGee, the season 11 winner of The Ultimate Fighter, won two fights in 2010 to kick off his UFC career, but injuries kept him out of action for nearly a year after that. However, he returned last September and put forth a solid performance in a decision win over Dongi Yang.

Philippou lost his UFC debut last March, but then defeated Jorge Rivera by decision before decimating Jared Hamman in his last outing. His striking isn't the most polished or technical, but he's got very heavy hands that can mean trouble for anyone when he connects.

With that said, McGee is a very durable middleweight, with his sole loss coming by decision four years ago against Jeremy Horn. He's been put in some bad spots before, only to snatch back victory, and if Philippou can't stop him quickly he'll be in for a very tough fight.

Philippou is going to try to rough up McGee throughout the fight, and he may succeed in doing so, but I'll lean towards McGee to pull off a decision win in this one.

UFC 144 early pay-per-view estimates reportedly at an impressive 375,000 buys

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_144_poster_Japan_version_180_11.jpg
Last weekend's UFC 144 card did much better than expected on pay-per-view, as Dave Meltzer reports in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required) that early estimates for the show have it coming in around 375,000 buys.

That's slightly down from the UFC 143 card earlier in the month, but when you compare it to other international events from recent years, as well as the cards Edgar had headlined previously, this has to be considered a very, very good number.

Edgar's last two fights with Gray Maynard, despite being incredible fights, drew just 225,000 buys (UFC 136) and 270,000 buys (UFC 125). His performances in those fights may have had something to do with the success of this event, though the fact that Rampage Jackson was on the card probably didn't hurt, either.

Still, look at what the UFC has done with international cards in the last couple of years: the two events in Brazil in the last six months, UFC 134 and UFC 142, drew 335,000 and 225,000 buys, respectively; and UFC 134 had Anderson Silva on top! The last two Australia events, UFC 110 and UFC 127, drew 240,000 and 260,000, respectively. In fact, the only internationally hosted UFC pay-per-view event to perform better than this card - should this number hold up - was the UFC 112 card in Abu Dhabi, which drew 500,000 viewers with both Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn headlining the event.

Penick's Analysis: That's a much higher number than I thought they'd get to considering the fact that Edgar hadn't caught on completely, not to mention the generally poor performance of international events for the UFC on pay-per-view. This is a great number, and this card in Japan ended up being quite an event for them overall. It was a sell out, did great on pay-per-view, and it was an excellent fight card to boot. The UFC has to be very happy with this number.

Michael Bisping wants fight in May, winner of UFC 147's Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen bout after that

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

BispingMichael_180_16.jpg
Michael Bisping moved into a number one contender fight with Chael Sonnen on short notice in January when Mark Munoz was forced out of UFC on Fox 2 with an injury. He lost a closely contested decision, but raised his stock in the eyes of most with how well he performed.

Now, he's hoping to get back into action soon, and hopes one more good performance will get him the title shot that has to date eluded him.

"I don't think it was a step backward," Bisping said in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. "If anything, I cemented myself as one of the top contenders in the division. I want to fight again soon. I'm aching to fight."

"I was just going back and forth with [UFC President] Dana [White] last night, so I'm not sure where we're at, but I'm hoping that [with] one more good win over a good opponent, I should fight the winner of Chael and Anderson later in the year."

Bisping's hoping to get onto a card by May, but knows that his options for opponents at the top are a bit limited at the moment. Still, he believes the UFC will be able to find him a fight that makes sense.

"All the top guys seemed to be booked up at the moment, so I'm scratching my head thinking of who to ask the UFC for," Bisping said. "I'm sure they'll come up with someone decent for me. That's what they do. I just tend to accept the fights and try to do my best. I was thinking about that last night, and I couldn't think of anyone."

As for who he could potentially face for the title, Bisping is hoping to see Sonnen come out with his hand raised against Anderson Silva in order to set up a rematch from their fight in January.

"From my own greedy thoughts, I'd like Chael to go out there and beat him," he said. "And everybody says, 'Well, Michael Bisping beat him and he beat Anderson,' but who knows. Apparently, Anderson had a broken rib or something and that affected his performance. Who knows if that was the case or not."

"Anderson is an amazing fighter - pound-for-pound, the best in the world. I would probably lean toward Anderson, but we all saw what Chael did the first time around."

Penick's Analysis: With Mark Munoz back to training, a Munoz-Bisping fight would make a lot of sense for May or June. Munoz was potentially in line to fight for the title had he fought and defeated Sonnen, so a fight with Bisping right now would work for both of them. Even though Bisping lost to Sonnen, it was a close enough fight to give him consideration for two of the rounds, and a win over Munoz could be a good enough case to give him a title fight. For Munoz, a fifth straight win over a fighter like Bisping would be huge for him, and could make him the most deserving challenger to the title after Sonnen.

UFC 145's Miguel Torres says he would have retired had the UFC not brought him back

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Miguel_Torres_180_3.jpeg
Miguel Torres nearly hung up his gloves late last year when he was released from the UFC. After Torres made an off-color comment on Twitter, the organization made an example of him and cut him from the roster. They've since brought him back into the fold, and he'll take on Michael McDonald at UFC 145 in April, but had they not done that, Torres saYS he would have been done as a fighter.

"When I got released I was extremely remorseful," Torres said in an interview with BloodyElbow.com. "I was very apologetic because I didn't know what I was going to do. Since I was a kid my main goal was to fight in the UFC and I finally got here and got released for some comments that I made. I didn't know what I was going to do."

"I didn't consider fighting on any other organization. I didn't consider going anywhere else. In my mind if I wasn't fighting for the UFC I wasn't fighting for anyone else. I would have ended up retiring and teaching at my gym and running my business."

Still, Torres says he wasn't feeling bad for himself, and took responsibility for his comments along with accepting the punishment, despite other incidents surrounding his going unpunished.

"I came up a certain way where things happen for a reason," he said. "You don't look and ask why didn't this happen to this person or this person did worse. You own up to what you do. If you do wrong you own up to it. I realized that I had messed up and that I had made a mistake and I didn't really try and worry about what other people were trying to say or do. Two wrongs don't make a right. What I said was wrong and I got punished for it."

Penick's Analysis: Torres has said all the right things since the release, and that's why the UFC agreed to bring him back. Instead of childishly fighting the release or trying to act like it was nothing, he apologized, showed remorse, and got back in the UFC's good graces. He'll have to walk on thin ice going forward, and his fans will have to hope that the release taught him a lesson regarding his Twitter commentary going forward. I believe he'll keep himself in check, and he still remains one of the best 135 lb. fighters in the world, so it's good to have him on the UFC roster, and as a fan I'm glad to see he wasn't essentially forced into retirement.

ENNIS: Lay of the Land - The UFC Lightweight Division March 2012 (part one)

By: Shawn Ennis, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Staff06Ennis_130_21.jpg
This will be the first of two parts breaking down the UFC's lightweight division.

First off, let's talk about the guy who just lost the Lightweight Championship. There have been some positive words said about Frankie Edgar since Saturday night, but not enough to balance out the insanity between idiots that suddenly think he was never any good, and the misguided souls (including Dana White, of all people) who continually call for his drop to 145 pounds. So here's what Frankie Edgar has accomplished as a lightweight: He became the first lightweight to beat B.J. Penn since 2002, and he's the only lightweight that Penn has ever fought and not beaten. He's the only fighter to have beaten Gray Maynard. He also defended the title three times, which ties the record for most defenses in the division. Lightweight is a shark tank - holding on to the belt for one defense is an accomplishment. You may point out that he rematched two men during his reign, but I fail to see how this was an advantage, especially given the fact that he was an underdog in both rematches. To me, it makes the defenses more impressive, not less. And he should have to drop a weight class in order to get a title shot? He should have to cut weight that he doesn't want to cut when he just lost one fight that several people had him winning? Come on, son. Now, we'll talk more about Edgar in a bit, but for the moment let's move on to the new King of the Lightweights, Ben Henderson, and who sits ready to challenge him for his newly acquired prize.

THE CHAMP

Ben Henderson (16-2):

It was never in doubt that Henderson was a hot prospect, even in December of 2010, when he had just dropped a unanimous decision and his WEC Lightweight Title to Anthony Pettis, he of the "Showtime Kick." But you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who would predict that a scant one year and change later, Henderson would hold the title over the deepest division in MMA. And yet here we are. Henderson used his truly bottomless gas tank, effective striking and movement, and excellent grappling to capture the title from former champ Frankie Edgar, though the decision was anything but an easy one to make, both for judges and those watching live and at home. What can't be denied is that we were given yet another great fight to decide the UFC Lightweight Championship, and that this belt will be very tough to retain for the "Smooth" one. He's got a pack of wild animals nipping at his heels, and the guy from whom he just took the title isn't going anywhere anytime soon (or at least he shouldn't have to).

THE CONTENDERS

Anthony Pettis (15-2):

Remember when Pettis beat Ben Henderson to close down the WEC and came to the UFC with a guaranteed title shot? That seems like forever ago, doesn't it? The fact is that Pettis only has two wins in the UFC, and really only his devastating knockout of Joe Lauzon was definitive. That having been said, the timing is right for Pettis to get his shot at the gold. With Lauzon coming off of a win over Melvin Guillard, who would have been next in line for a shot instead of Henderson had he been able to win that fight, Pettis's head kick was on the right card against the right opponent for him to take the title shot that should probably rightfully go to the just-vanquished Edgar. But as Gus Johnson would say, these things happen in MMA, and one could hardly call him the least deserving title contender we've ever seen.

Frankie Edgar (14-2-1):

You'd better believe he's in this category. Sure, in reality may have to fight again before getting his deserved rematch against Henderson (or a shot at Pettis should he be able to take out Henderson again). But considering the closeness of the decision (even though I had the fight scored four rounds to one in favor of Henderson, it wasn't exactly a clear-cut thing), along with the fact that Edgar was the best Lightweight Champion the UFC has seen if you ask me, I can't see putting him in another category.

A STEP OR TWO AWAY

Jim Miller (21-3):

It's not every day that a guy is a step or two away from a title shot when he just got blown out of the water by the champion less than a year ago, but not everyone is Jim Miller. Miller's only career losses have been to former champion Frankie Edgar, current champ Ben Henderson, and two-time title challenger Gray Maynard. In fact, before his loss to Henderson, Miller had won seven straight and seemed destined for a title shot at that point had he been able to put away the future champion. That proved to be a tall order, especially given the rumors after the fight that Miller had battled illness going into the bout. Should Miller be able to top Nate Diaz on the next FOX show, he'll likely be at most one fight away from a title shot. Whom he actually fights to earn the shot will depend on how the title contender situation shakes out.

Nate Diaz (15-7):

We talk a lot about how fortunes can change very quickly in MMA, and especially in a deep UFC division, and the case is no different with the younger Diaz brother. Diaz started his UFC career by winning his season of The Ultimate Fighter and going 4-0 afterwards. But a step up in competition against stout wrestlers brought a different fortune as Diaz went 1-3 in his next four. He decided that a move to welterweight was in order, but achieved mixed results, going 2-2 and realizing that he was outsized at 170 pounds. Since his return to the lightweight division, the improvement has been dramatic and immediate. Diaz obliterated Takanori Gomi (which, granted, is not the accomplishment it once was), and most recently absolutely dismantled the surging Donald Cerrone, who had won six straight going into their fight. Diaz will once again be tested against a strong wrestler in Miller. If he can overcome the hurdle that has plagued him thus far, he will be a real test for anyone at the top of the division, and he'll be close to a title fight.

UP AND COMERS

John Cholish (8-1):

In Cholish's UFC debut against Mitch Clarke, he came out in the first round and looked to be tentative. Perhaps it was the famed "Octagon jitters," or maybe he was just getting a feel for his opponent, but the 9-0 Clarke looked very good in picking Cholish apart for the first few minutes. That all changed in the second round. While Clarke - perhaps dealing with the adrenaline dump of his own Octagon debut - slowed and gassed, Cholish kept his composure and thrived. He punished Clarke on the feet and eventually got the fight to the ground, where he flattened Clarke out after a fantastic scramble and caused a stoppage due to strikes with fewer than 30 seconds left in the round. If Cholish fights more like he did in the second round, he could be one to watch.

Paul Sass (12-0):

Sometimes a fighter debuts in the UFC with a gaudy record that shows him winning by the same method each time. Thus was the case with Paul Sass when he debuted in the UFC in October of 2010 against Mark Holst. Sass had won nine of his fights by submission, with seven of them coming via triangle choke. Well, the book was out on that, right? Surely he wouldn't use a triangle to win the fight. Right? Wrong. Sass won by triangle in the first round. The other two submission wins for Sass prior to his UFC career came via heel hook. When Sass faced Michael Johnson in October of last year, he won via what looked like an incredibly damaging heel hook in the first round. Now that is impressive. Sass has a very interesting fight against Jacob Volkmann coming up in May at UFC 146, and Volkmann should give us an idea of whether Sass can hang with a wrestler who excels at grinding people down. Since dropping to lightweight in 2010, Volkmann has rattled off five straight victories by using his grinding style. How Sass fares against that will be telling of where he is now and what he is capable of later. If he's blown out of the water, it's not a great thing. But even if he hangs in there and loses a spirited contest, that's not the end of the world. This guy is one to watch for sure.

Khabib Nurmagomedov (17-0):

If I learned how to spell Palaszewski without looking, hopefully I'll be able to get this one right eventually, because I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon. Nurmagomedov made his UFC debut against the very durable Kamal Shalorus and absolutely dominated him from the opening round. In that round, he floored Shalorus early, and his opponent was never the same after that - even though the fight went into the third round before Nurmagomedov finished with a rear naked choke (the first time Shalorus had been submitted). Nurmagomedov seems to be extremely dangerous, and of course he's a world Sambo champion, which is a sport that, at times, tends to translate nicely into MMA success. Next time you see a Russian guy with the name "Khabib" and a long last name, just remember you want to watch that fight. This guy will be bringing some quality violence for a long time.

Urijah Faber to opposing TUF 15 coach Dominick Cruz: "You're welcome for letting you live"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FaberUrijah_180_3.jpg
UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz has only been defeated once in his career, a submission loss to Urijah Faber in the WEC in 2007. He avenged that loss - barely - last summer, besting Faber by decision despite getting knocked down several times throughout the fight.

The two of them will now meet for a third time this summer after a stint coaching on The Ultimate Fighter, which begins its first live season next Friday night on FX. As he's preparing for 13 weeks alongside his nemesis, the challenger Faber is feeling supremely confident in his ability to take the title from Cruz when they step back in the cage against one another.

"The guy's a good fighter. He's good at what he does, which is scoring some points," Faber said on Monday's new edition of Inside MMA on HDNet. "He's not dangerous. He's not scary. I knocked him down three different times in three different rounds. He had 11 takedown attempts and basically got one and a half, and that's about it. If the guy thinks I don't know how to beat him... I already did beat him!"

"He's alive right now because there [are] rules in MMA and I had to release his neck and let him breathe! You're welcome, Dominick Cruz, for giving you life and letting you live. Next time, I'm gonna do the same thing. I'm gonna let you live, but it's gonna be painful. That's what fighting's about, right? And that's how I approach the fight. Let's finish this fight. And he's doing 'point fighting.' This isn't a karate tournament. I mean, do you wanna take hits to the head away next?"

Penick's Analysis: You can be sure we're going to get a lot more of this over the next 13 weeks on FX, and it will culminate in what should be one hell of a Championship fight this summer. Faber absolutely had a case for taking the decision in their rematch last summer, especially with several knockdowns of Cruz coming into play. He failed to fully capitalize, and that likely swayed judges, but he has the skills and the knowledge about Cruz to defeat him. And he's right, he has already beat him once, and he feels he can find a way to do it once again. This is going to be a fantastic rubber match, and hopefully the fight's profile gets boosted through the two of them coaching on this new season of TUF.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua says he and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will rematch in the UFC before they retire

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

RuaShogun_180_3.jpg
Almost seven years ago, two future UFC Light Heavyweight Champions in Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua squared off in the opening round of the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix. In that fight, Rua handed Jackson one of the most brutal losses of his career when he connected with soccer kicks that put Jackson out cold.

Now in 2012, a rematch has been on the minds of both of them for some time. Jackson wanted that fight to be the one he had in Japan last weekend at UFC 144, but a five round war with Dan Henderson kept "Shogun" from being able to make that date. Still, he doesn't want the fight any less, and believes it is a bout that will definitely happen at some point in the future.

"The fight against Rampage will happen eventually," Shogun said in an interview with Tatame.com. "It's inevitable and UFC knows it. He won't retire before fighting me and neither [will] I (laughs)."

That's not to say it will be the next fight for either of them. Rampage's loss to Ryan Bader on Saturday night sets him back a bit, and there are other potential opponents who could be waiting in the wings for "Shogun" upon his return.

"I don't discard Ryan Bader nor Rampage, Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin... I guess there are many guys I could fight," he said. "Actually, soon I'll know more about it and I'll keep you posted. I'm sure I'll train focused on my opponent and he's going to be a hard one."

Penick's Analysis: A Shogun-Rampage fight is a big name fight still for each of them, but with Jackson reeling from a knee injury before and during the fight that's not likely to be the next fight for either of them. I think a fight between Shogun and Phil Davis could be in order, even a returning Rich Franklin could be a potential top matchup for him as well. Outside of that, there's not a ton available, and I don't know if it's right to put him in there with Ryan Bader with him coming off a loss and Bader off a win; though I suppose that might have some potential. Regardless, if the Rampage-Shogun fight does happen in the future, it could certainly be a desirable matchup for all involved.
