The Bellator Fighting Championships travels to the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida on July 20th for a stacked Bellator 72.
In the main event of he fight card, Karl “Psycho” Amoussou will battle Bryan “The Beast” Baker in the season six welterweight tournament final. The summer series light heavyweight tournament also continues with both semifinal bouts. In addition, former UFC and Strikeforce welterweight Paul Daley will be making his Bellator debut.
The main card for Bellator 72 will be televised live on MTV2 and EPIX HD beginning at 8:00pm ET. The preliminary card will be streamed free on Spike.com at 6:30pm ET.
Bellator 72 Main Card Results
Waachiim Spiritwolf vs. Marius Zaromskis
Zaromskis defeated Spiritwolf by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27). The third meeting between the fighters finally goes the distance but not without some questionable scoring. Their first fight ended in a No Contest and then the rematch was a debatable second round doctors stoppage for Zaromskis. In this meeting Zaromskis pressed forwarded controlling the action with his disciplined striking.
Tim Carpenter vs. Travis Wiuff – Light Heavyweight Semifinal
Wiuff defeated Carpenter by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). Takedowns and heavy top control would carry Wiuff to the victory and a spot in the light heavyweight tournament finals. Wiuff would avoid several submission attempts while picking his shots on the ground. In the most significant action, Wiuff lifted Carpenter then carried him to the opposite side of the cage before slamming him down into the fence.
Emanuel Newton vs. Attila Vegh – Light Heavyweight Semifinal
Vegh defeated Newton by split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28). It was a very close bout in which Newton appeared to be the more aggressive and active fighter. Vegh stayed on the outside looking to counter as Newton advanced forward. With the win Vegh advances to the light heavyweight tournament final against Wiuff.
Rudy Bears vs. Paul Daley
Daley defeated Bears by technical knockout at 2:45 of the first round. Daley controlled Bears with a Thai plum and fired off several knees. Bears tried to shake out but was dropped from a big left hook from Daley. Daley is victorious in his Bellator debut. Who is next for Daley?
Bryan Baker vs. Karl Amoussou – Welterweight Final
Amoussou defeated Baker by an inverted heel hook submission at 0:56 of the first round. Amoussou landed a leg kick which took Baker’s legs out causing him to lose his balance. In a lightning quick move, Amoussou grabbed Baker waist then dropped down for the heel hook finish. With the win Amoussou earned a $100,000 payday and a title fight against current welterweight champion Ben Askren.
