Eddie Alvarez, the former champion in Bellator‘s lightweight division, has confirmed he will fight this October – just not inside the Octagon as many might have hoped. Alvarez will compete on Bellator’s October 15 card in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. No opponent has been made public, but one is expected to be announced in the coming days.
MMAFighting first reported the news of Alvarez’s upcoming bout.
The contract binding Alvarez to Bellator will officially expire after the fight, giving the promotion a three-month window to negotiate with him. During that time, Bellator will also be able to match any deal he receives, but after the three months are up, Alvarez is free to sign with any organization he pleases.
Alvarez (23-3) rebounded from a tough loss to Michael Chandler for his title last year by defeating Shinya Aoki. He has long been rumored to be following fellow former Bellator champion Hector Lombard to the UFC.
