A welterweight bout between former champion BJ Penn and rising star Rory MacDonald which materialized over the past or so has been confirmed by UFC officials. The fighters have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 152 on September 22nd.
Penn (16-8-2) is a former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion. He last competed at UFC 137 where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nick Diaz. Penn has just one win in his last five bouts. He decided to take a break from competition following that bout but it was unclear if Penn would ever return to the Octagon.
MacDonald (13-1-1) is considered by many to be one of the top young fighters in the welterweight division. He is a current training partner with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at the Tristar gym. MacDonald has won his past three bouts and the only loss on his record is to current interim champion Carlos Condit. In his most recent bout, MacDonald defeated Che Mills by technical knockout at UFC 145.
UFC 152 will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The card is expected to feature the heavyweight title rematch with champion Junior dos Santos defending the title against former champion Cain Velasquez.
