Brett Rogers’ opponent, light heavyweight tournament announced for Bellator 71

Bellator FC will look to crown a contender for light heavyweight champ Christian M’Pumbu with a new field of eight tournament participants set to debut next Friday night as part of the organization’s Summer Series of events. Also scheduled for action at Bellator 71, former Strikeforce heavyweight Brett Rogers aims to make a statement in his debut under the promotion’s banner by beating former friend/training partner Kevin Asplund.

The entire card for the June 22 show was confirmed earlier today in an official press release. The Mountaineer Casino in Chester, West Virginia will play host to the evening’s action.

Among the 205ers competing to earn a title-shot is none other than Travis Wiuff, the very man who beat M’Pumbu in the champ’s only in-ring appearance since winning the belt. However, based on Bellator’s tournament structure where gold is concerned, Wiuff’s win did little besides give him bragging rights as the strap was not on the line.

Rogers holds an 11-4 record with ten knockouts but hasn’t won since October 2010. Comparably, Asplund is 15-1 and hasn’t lost since his first fight a decade ago.
