The injury bug has forced former UFC welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves out of scheduled UFC 149 clash against Siyar Bahadurzada. UFC officials announced that Chris Clements has agreed to fill Alves’ spot on the card opposite of Bahadurzada.
The match-up of Clements and Bahadurzada unites two welterweights who have a combined 21 knockouts between them. Bahadurzada (21-4-1) is coming off a successful promotional debut in which he needed just 42 second to finish Paulo Thiago at UFC on FUEL TV 2. Clements (11-4) will also be making his second appearance in the UFC. He earned a split decision win over Keith Wisniewski at UFC 145 which ran his winning streak to five bouts.
UFC 149 takes place on July 21st from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Featherweight champion Jose Aldo will put his title on the line against number one contender Erik Koch. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was scheduled to face Thiago Silva in the co-main event, however, an injury has also taken Silva off the card. A replacement opponent for Rua has yet to be announced.
