Injured Vitor Belfort out of UFC 147 match-up with Wanderlei Silva

For the second time in a month the UFC has seen a bout between opposing coaches on the Ultimate Fighter be laid to waste due to injury. Weeks removed from the announcement bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz had torn his ACL and could no longer fight Urijah Faber at UFC 148, it has now come to light Vitor Belfort broke his hand in training and had withdrawn from a planned pairing against Wanderlei Silva. The two were scheduled to fight on June 23 in the main event at UFC 147 and were recently team-heads on TUF Brasil.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the bad news over the weekend. A replacement for the 35-year old Belfort is currently being sought with White assuring fans “The Axe Murderer” will still fight at next month’s event.

Belfort Discusses his Most Recent Win

It was also mentioned Belfort underwent surgery to repair the damage. His timetable for return is currently unknown.

Belfort and Silva have a long history together going back to a meeting in 1998 where “The Phenom” emerged victorious after scoring a 44-second knockout. Since then the two have built reputations for themselves as two of MMA’s all-time greats with more than 50 combined wins including 44 finishes and success against names like Randy Couture, Quinton Jackson, Dan Henderson, and Rich Franklin.
