Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin has been tapped to replace the injured Vitor Belfort against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147. UFC officials announced the bout on Wednesday. UFC 147 takes place on June 23rd in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Silva and Belfort were set to make their long awaited rematch following their first bout at UFC Brazil in 1998. In that bout, Belfort needed just 44 seconds to take out Silva. Unfortunately, Belfort was forced to withdraw from the main event bout after suffering a broken hand.
In their initial meeting at UFC 99 in June 2009, Franklin (28-6) would score a unanimous decision win over Silva (34-11-1). Franklin has only fought three times since that bout and has posted a 1-2 record. In his most recent fight at UFC 126, Franklin would drop a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin. Silva has won two of his last three outings. He last competed at UFC 139 where he would score a second round technical knockout of Cung Le.
The co-main event of UFC 147 features a heavyweight clash between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow. Also set for the fight card is the finale of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil.
