=====FX MAIN CARD=====
-Jon Anik and Kenny Florian welcome the audience to the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida for tonight's main card. The preliminary card had a slight amount of action sandwiched between several less than thrilling fights, but the main card should hopefully pick things up, especially with tonight's flyweight rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall. Up first tonight is some action in the bantamweight division.
FIGHT ONE: EDDIE WINELAND VS. SCOTT JORGENSEN (BANTAMWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Wineland came straight ahead but allowed Jorgensen to circle into the center himself. Wineland landed a jab as Jorgensen tried to pop in. Jorgensen landed a short strike and grabbed a clinch. He landed a knee then separated. Jorgensen landed a left. Wineland landed the jab again. Jorgensen connected on the jab. Jorgensen landed a right but Wineland countered with a right. The exchange happened a second time. Jorgensen landed a nice leg kick and a few punches. Wineland landed a punch. He got in another straight punch. Wineland dropped Jorgensen with a straight punch. Jorgensen popped back up but he was hurt. Wineland clinched, took him to the cage, and tripped him for a takedown. Jorgensen kicked him off and scrambled to his feet, eating a couple strikes on his way up. Jorgensen landed a left. Jorgensen tried to move forward with his striking, but Wineland's reach kept him at bay. Wineland landed another good combo. He rocked Jorgensen with another right, but Jorgensen stayed standing. Jorgensen threw a head kick but Wineland ducked under it. The round came to an end in a standoff.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Wineland. The knockdown and takedown turned a fairly back and forth round to Wineland's favor.
ROUND TWO: Jorgensen landed an early knee that opened Wineland up. He landed a nice short combination behind it. He got in close and got the better of an exchange. Wineland's cut was bleeding badly, but he popped back with a couple of hard right hands. Jorgensen landed the left. He landed a hook and shot in, but Wineland countered and cot to his feet. Wineland landed a combination. They exchanged strikes again in the center. Jorgensen landed a left and Wineland landed the right again. Jorgensen landed another good left. Wineland landed the right again. They traded punches. Jorgensen grabbed a clinch, but Wineland stuffed any takedown attempt quick. Wineland landed a couple jabs. Jorgensen walked in and ate the right hand again. Wineland stutter stepped with a right and knocked Jorgensen down. He followed up with a few more strikes and the fight was stopped. Wow. That was impressive stuff from Wineland, especially considering Jorgensen's never been stopped by strikes before.
WINNER: Wineland via KO at 4:10 of the second round
STAR RATING: (***) That was just a great fight. Jorgensen was landing several strikes in both rounds, and bloodied up Wineland with a knee early in the first round, but Wineland was landing that right hand punch throughout the bout and finally did something no one has ever done in stopping Scott Jorgensen by strikes.
FIGHT TWO: MIKE PYLE VS. JOSH NEER (WELTERWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Pyle landed an early leg kick as Neer stalked him. Pyle threw a looping overhand right that missed. Pyle then shot in and scored a takedown into Neer's guard. He stood and landed a hard straight right down onto Neer. He tried to pass and moved to side control. Pyle tried to move to mount, but Neer blocked it. Neer went for a heel hook, but Pyle got out and back into his guard. Neer shot his legs up for an attempted triangle, but Pyle popped out of it and back into his guard. The action slowed on the ground as Neer held control of Pyle's position.Pyle stood again and landed a couple of strikes. Neer scrambled and grabbed a single leg as he got to his feet. He ate a knee for his trouble. Neer walked him down and landed an elbow and a couple of strikes. Neer landed a short right. Pyle landed a knee. He landed a couple more in the clinch. Neer landed a short combo. Neer walked ahead and landed a big combination to the body. Pyle landed a huge punch as Neer walked forward that sent Pyle crashing face down and the ref stopped the fight just before the round ended. Wow. Replay showed it was a two punch combo. Huge finish.
WINNER: Pyle via KO at 4:56 of the first round
STAR RATING: (***-) That was another excellent finish and a couple awesome minutes of action at the end there. The grappling slowed down in spots, but when they got back to their feet the finish of that round was just excellent. Neer was nearly turning the round back in his favor, and then Pyle pulled out the knockout win with seconds left. Great stuff.
FIGHT THREE: ERICK SILVA VS. CHARLIE BRENNEMAN (WELTERWEIGHT)
ROUND ONE: Brenneman immediately tried to close the distance for a takedown but nearly got blitzed by knees and punches from Silva. Silva went for a spinning kick and Brenneman took him down. Silva popped right back up, though, but Brenneman stayed on him. Brenneman got Silva's back standing. He rolled Silva back and Silva went for a leg lock, which got him back to his feet. Brenneman pressed for a clinch, but Silva stuffed him and the ref broke it up quickly. Silva went for a kick that Brenneman blocked. Brenneman rushed in and ate a knee as he scored a takedown. Silva quickly worked back to his feet. The crowd booed a stalled clinch. Brenneman landed a few strikes to the body with more boos raining down. They were separated again. Silva landed a hard kick. He threw a spinning kick to the body and tried to pressure Brenneman. Brenneman missed another attempt. They traded strikes in close. Silva landed a couple hard body kicks. Brenneman landed a couple of strikes. Silva sprawled and took Brenneman's back. He locked on the rear naked choke and forced Brenneman to tap. Impressive work from Erick Silva tonight.
WINNER: Silva via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:33 of the first round
STAR RATING: (**+) Another fun fight on this card. Silva's got a lot of skills, and he's a dangerous opponent for anyone right now. He hurt Brenneman with those body kicks, which set up that final sprawl to the sub position. Great work, but there are still a lot of really talented fighters ahead of him in this division.
MAIN EVENT FIGHT FOUR: DEMETRIOUS JOHNSON VS. IAN MCCALL (FLYWEIGHT TOURNEY SEMIFINAL)
ROUND ONE: They both came out to the center quick and feigned strikes. They traded leg kicks. Johnson landed a couple of short punches and popped out. McCall closed the distance and grabbed a clinch. Johnson turned him around on the cage. Johnson shot for a takedown and he scored one on the cage, but McCall popped up fairly quickly. Johnson landed an elbow to separate. McCall pressed forward, but Johnson kept him back with a quick combo that was blocked. McCall grazed Johnson with a left. McCall landed a short combo. Johnson popped in and McCall landed a good right. Johnson staggered McCall with a counter right and McCall fell to his back. Johnson engaged into his guard. McCall tried to scramble and got to his feet with Johnson on his back. McCall recovered and turned around. Johnson tried a throw, but McCall kept on his feet. He was cut on the bridge of the nose. McCall tried to rush in with a flurry, but Johnson then took him down. McCall popped up and landed a short flurry of body punches. Johnson landed a body kick. McCall closed the distance with a short combo before the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. Fast and furious action as expected. Johnson's knockdown and takedowns were the key, and McCall has started slowly again. Johnson had a good round there.
ROUND TWO: McCall pressed in early, closed the distance and scored a takedown with a double leg takedown. Johnson immediately scrambled to his feet. McCall landed a good combination in close. He landed a hard inside leg kick and continued to stalk. McCall landed a couple of punches and clinched, but Johnson turned him around on the cage. He turned it back around with a couple of knees and they separated. Johnson landed a short flurry. McCall landed a hard body kick, then one that grazed the cup of Johnson, leading to a slight delay. McCall went back to the kicks, then ducked under a strike and scored a takedown. However, Johnson again popped to his feet. McCall stayed on him, then dragged him down briefly, getting his back standing. McCall landed a suplex, but Johnson got back to his feet again. Johnson pressed in with a short combination. They clinched and traded knees. McCall landed a short elbow. He turned Johnson around on the cage, then separated with a great spinning back elbow. Johnson pressed in again, but McCall turned Johnson around and pressed him to the cage briefly before they separated. They got in close and McCall landed a few punches to Johnson's knees. Johnson landed a right. McCall threw a high kick but it was blcoked. He landed a good leg kick. He tried to throw a flying knee, but it was blocked. Still, he added a throw as the round ended.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 McCall. Awesome round of action. Lots of back and forth to it, but McCall's numerous takedowns were the difference.
ROUND THREE: McCall again pressed in early. They clinched and traded strikes. Johnson separated with a couple of strikes. McCall clinched again, threw Johnson back, and landed a couple of strikes of his own. McCall landed a knee to the body. They traded knees. McCall landed a hard elbow. Johnson got separation, then initiated the clinch himself. He dropped for a takedown and landed it. McCall got to his feet with Johnson taking his back. Johnson landed a right as he separated. McCall tried to close the distance and Johnson landed a couple. McCall almost scored a trip, then landed a knee as Johnson stood. He landed a leg kick. Johnson caught a kick and landed a couple strikes. They traded punches. McCall pressed in with a clinch and landed a few knees. He briefly went for a takedown, then backed off and threw a jumping knee. They traded strikes. McCall clinched again and they traded strikes. Knees continued flying. Johnson got free again. McCall landed a hard left, then Johnson scored a right. McCall landed a left and clinched. They traded strikes again. Johnson turned him around and again went for a takedown.McCall tried to hold it off but got briefly tripped up. McCall turned him around in a clinch and they ended in a clinch.
Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Johnson. That really may be a 10-10 round. Really close round, very well could be another draw here worthy of a fourth and deciding round.
WINNER: Johnson via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)
STAR RATING: (**+) Not as good as their first encounter, and there wasn't enough of a sense of urgency to finish from either in a close fight in that third round. Johnson was doing enough to win, but McCall didn't show up tonight like he did in March. Still, the first half was really good, it just didn't live up to the first bout.
