The UFC is returning to television tomorrow night, just four days after UFC 148, with their fourth Fuel TV show. The card will come to us live from San Jose, CA and may determine who faces Anderson Silva next for the UFC Middleweight Championship given the main event between Mark Munoz-Chris Weidman. You know, the same title he defended this past Saturday night with a second round TKO of Chael Sonnen.
Weidman is undefeated in eight career bouts and is 4-0 inside the Octagon. He was last seen defeating Demian Maia by unanimous decision after taking the bout on just eleven days notice and having to cut an insane amount of weight in that short time. His inclusion on the card was made necessary because Maia’s original opponent, Michael Bisping, moved up to the co-main event opposite Sonnen after Sonnen’s original opponent (Munoz) was forced to the shelf with an elbow injury.
This card has eleven total bouts and some interesting match-ups, but the purpose of this article is to determine who needs a victory to avoid the dreaded pink slip. Let’s take a look at which fighters are on the firing line:
Damacio Page: It hasn’t been an easy run for page these last three years. He has fought just once a year since 2010. This fight will mark the first time since 2009 that he has fought twice in the same year. He hasn’t won a fight since he defeated Will Campuzano at WEC 43 in October of 2010. With three straight losses and two of them in the UFC Page desperately needs a win or it could spell the end of his run with Zuffa.
Alex Caceres: While he may be a colorful character Caceres knows he needs much more than that to keep his spot with the worlds’ top MMA promotion. He has a very pedestrian 6-5 overall record and is 1-3 inside the Octagon. He was penalized two points in his last loss to Edwin Figueroa at UFC 143 for low blows. I would imagine that another loss for “Bruce Leroy” and he will be shown the door.
Josh Ferguson: At only 23 years old Ferguson already has 12 career MMA bouts and is 8-4 overall, but lost his UFC debut to Roland Delome at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale via third-round submission. He was a member of Team Bisping and made it to the third round before losing to Johnny Bedford. This bout will mark his flyweight debut so he may have some room should he lose, but as we all know it’s never a good thing to start your UFC career off at 0-2.
Dan Stittgen: Unfortunately for Stittgen he will remain on the UFC highlight reels for years to come because of the devastating head kick he received at the feet of Stephen Thompson when the two met at UFC 143. He is another fighter that needs a win to avoid starting off at 0-2. He showed very little when he fought Thompson, but that may have been caused by some Octagon jitters. He gets another shot in San Jose, but if he doesn’t pick up a win I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get cut.
