UPDATE: Daniel Cormier facing Frank Mir in final Strikeforce fight

The moment Zuffa purchased Strikeforce fans began wondering when a crossover bout between the organization and the UFC would take place. They now have an answer – sort of, that is.

According to a report from USA Today citing UFC President Dana White, former heavyweight champion Frank Mir will make a single stop in Strikeforce this fall for a clash with Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier. The fight is expected to be the final appearance for Cormier in the company’s cage, as he will follow his former peers over to the UFC with Strikeforce no longer hosting a heavyweight division.

UPDATE: Though the fight was originally linked to a September 29 show it now appears Cormier-Mir will be moved to a different Strikeforce card in October or November.

Cormier Questions How Many UFC Fighters Are Actually Willing to Compete in Strikeforce

“There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense,” stated White to the media outlet. “The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world…He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”

Cormier is 10-0 in his career including a recent outpointing of Josh Barnett and victories over Jeff Monson as well as Antonio Silva. Comparably, Mir holds an overall record of 16-6 but is coming off a strike-based stoppage to UFC title-holder Junior dos Santos.

Mir-Cormier will act as the card’s co-headliner with lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez’s defense against Pat Healy serving as the main event.
