Bibiano Fernandes set to make UFC debut in Calgary

The Canadianization of UFC 149 continues.

The card, which already features a Canadian fighter in each preliminary bout booked to date, will now be bolstered an international sensation that calls the country home.

If you were still a bit unsure of what to make about DREAM’s current situation, perhaps the news that their reigning bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes has signed with the UFC may begin to put things into perspective.  The Brazilian-born Vancouverite has been one of DREAM’s greatest success stories to date.  Following a 3-2 start to his career, Fernandes was invited to participate in DREAM’s 2009 Featherweight Grand Prix after a 58 second submission victory over Len Tam and has not looked back since.  Fernandes has won ten of his last eleven en route to holding the defunct organization’s featherweight and bantamweight titles including victories over Joe Warren, Joachim Hansen and Antonio Banuelos.

Fernandes will make his debut against fellow Canadian Roland Delorme, who holds a 2-0 record in the UFC following his appearance on the Ultimate Fighter Season 14.

UFC 149 takes place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on July 21 at the Saddledome. The match-up between Delorme-Fernandes will likely take place on the preliminary portion of the card.
