Clay Guida thinks Gray Maynard’s camp should be focused on match-up, not mane

When UFC lightweight Gray Maynard enters the Octagon tonight to face Clay Guida in the main event at UFC on FX 4 he’ll do so with an entirely new camp behind him after abandoning his longtime home of Xtreme Couture to spend time at Nova Uniao and American Kickboxing Academy. However, it’s Guida who will appear to be the changed fighter as a result of Maynard’s team requesting he braid his trademark tresses rather than let the locks flow as they have in the past.

Guida was asked about the situation after yesterday’s weigh-ins where he maintained his ever-present sense of humor, shrugging off any concerns about suffering a Samson-like stumble due to the change in hairstyle.

“I thought about it for about five minutes and a lot of the media have asked more questions about it than I’ve put time thinking (about it). I’m focused on gameplan, strategy, and getting my hand raised. Long hair, don’t care. I’m going out there to have fun,” said Guida to Fuel TV. “Gray’s a great guy. I’m sure it has nothing to do with him. It’s just something maybe his camp was focused on and they should be focused on the fight instead.”

When it comes to the actual fight at hand, Guida’s gameplan is similar to those he’s employed in the past – press the pace and avoid eating any significant shots.

“Just stay in his face, stay on my horse, watch out for the big punches, don’t let him set up and get his feet underneath him, his hips behind his punches…outwrestle him. Wrestling wins championships,” replied Guida when asked to shine some light on his strategy. “If they lose to a junior college wrestler they’ll probably feel bad.”

UFC on FX 4 kicks off at 5:00 PM EST on Facebook with a pair of fights before action heads to Fuel TV an hour later and FX at 9:00 PM EST.
