Frank Mir granted testosterone use exemption prior to Junior dos Santos fight

The controversial issue of testosterone has raised its ugly head once again in relation to UFC 146 after it was revealed heavyweight Frank Mir was granted a TUE leading up to his title-shot at Junior dos Santos. Dos Santos’ previously scheduled opponent, Alistair Overeem, was removed from the match-up after testing positive for an elevated T/E level indicating testosterone abuse. However, Mir’s use was considered to be legitimate after receiving approval from the Nevada Athletic Commission.

None of the involved parties have released an official comment on the matter.

Mir’s testosterone use was confirmed by MMAJunkie by way of NAC executive Keith Kizer.

The former UFC champion becomes the latest fighter attached to Testosterone Replacement Therapy with other competitors like Quinton Jackson, Dan Henderson, and Chael Sonnen also being associated with injecting the substance under a physician’s recommendation.

Ultimately it seems the testosterone did not impact Mir’s performance enough to make a difference as Dos Santos defeated him by way of strikes in the second round to retain his title.
