Cain Velasquez earns title-shot with finish of Antonio Silva

Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos didn’t have to wait long to find out who he’ll be facing the next time he puts his divisional title on the line. Last night, shortly after the conclusion of the Brazilian’s successful defense against Frank Mir at UFC 146, head honcho Dana White confirmed Cain Velasquez had grabbed hold of top contendership with his trouncing of Antonio Silva earlier in the evening.

“Yeah, that’s what’s next. Cain was the undefeated champion, and he gets another shot at Junior,” said White on Fuel TV’s post-event show, referring to Velasquez’s loss to Dos Santos in November.

Velasquez brutalized Silva in the UFC 146 co-headliner, taking him down early and pummeling him from above until the referee was forced to step in with about 90 seconds remaining in the bout’s opening round. The carnage from their clash was clear with a cut on Silva’s face resulting in the canvas being painted crimson.

The 10-1 Velasquez notched his eighth victory inside the Octagon with the win including seven strike-based stoppages.
