After a month of speculation surrounding Chael Sonnen’s future the outspoken UFC competitor has finally let the world know what his next move will be and it does indeed involve the light heavyweight division. While Sonnen fighting at 205 pounds is not necessarily a surprise, the opponent he’ll be facing in his promotional unveiling at the weight most certainly was – Forrest Griffin.
The match-up is set to take place at the UFC’s annual year-end event on New Year’s Eve Weekend.
Sonnen revealed the information on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight where he praised Griffin as a tough competitor and showed the utmost respect for the former light heavyweight champion.
“Sure, I could go up to 205 and I could take Jon Jones’ belt away the same as I could take his candy on Halloween. He’s a little punk kid. I could snatch it away all I want,” explained Sonnen of his intent at 205 in standard trash-talking fashion. “But there’s something to be said in sportsmanship about earning your shot and on 29th of December I’m gonna go through Forrest Griffin to do it.”
Griffin holds an overall record of 19-7 including wins over former title-holders Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson. He and Sonnen fought in 2003 before either ever appeared inside the Octagon with Griffin taking home a submission win in the opening round of action.
