The lineup for UFC 152 took a hit this weekend when news surfaced revealing welterweight Rory MacDonald had suffered a cut in training requiring 38 stitches and would not be ready to go again in time for a scheduled scrap with BJ Penn on September 22 at the Toronto-bound show. Though the UFC has not officially announced how his withdrawal would be handled, MacDonald made it clear he’s still hopefully for a crack at Penn before year’s end.
MacDonald went on Twitter to post a picture of the injury and express his remaining desire to face Penn in mid-November, possibly at UFC 154 in Montreal.
Penn replied to MacDonald’s request through Twitter, though he had a different date in mind for their dance, writing, “I am sorry to hear about the injury to Rory MacDonald. This is a fight that got me out of retirement and one that I was looking forward to. I would like to wish Rory a speedy and healthy recovery and request a postponement of our fight to the Rio card. To Rory, let’s stay with VADA and continue through with the program from now until we fight!”
MacDonald Ready to “Hurt” Penn
The UFC is scheduled to stop in Rio de Janeiro on October 13 for UFC 153.
In the wake of the news, a handful of other fighters including Jon Fitch and Sean Sherk have also stepped up to state they would be happy to fill the vacancy created by MacDonald’s injury.
